BEGG’S DEFORMETER APPARATUS
This apparatus is manufactured to great precision and provides utmost durability under constant use. Few of the cases are:
- Arch bridges in which the deck beams and spandrel columns are monolithic with arch rib.
- Wind stresses in tall orifice buildings, locomotive frames cellular foundation mats and large penstocks etc.
It is well recognized that in such cases a quicker and exact method of analysis is provided by the use of MAXWELLS’ theorem of reciprocal deflection where direct measurements replace huge calculations. This eliminates the usual simplifying assumptions needed for theoretical calculations and also eliminates effects like peculiar distribution of stresses at corners and junction of members. The results thus obtained are nearer the truth than obtained by theoretical calculations.
